Lesson 10: The Start
It is so easy to substitute what we need with what we want. The horizontal world is filled with a plethora of goodies that can consume your time, energy and focus. But what you truly desire is your place in the vertical world where all events and encounters are seen through the light of wisdom and understanding. It’s not that going to Disney World isn’t fun…it’s that you can have both! But when you substitute the horizontal for the vertical, you always end up in the same place. Disappointed. Unfulfilled. Confused.
“Renouncing servitude to the dim Abyss,
It shall learn at last who lived within unseen,
And seized with marvel in the adoring heart
To the enthroned Child-Godhead kneel aware.
Trembling with beauty and delight and love,
But first the spirit’s ascent we must achieve.”
The beginning of the journey is the desire to go on the journey. It is the birth of your awakening. But is there not an almost daily assault in life of managing the demands of survival? Who has not known that struggle? It is not surprising at all that you substitute and compromise! Using “Savitri” as our guide, I want to encourage you to see beyond survival and consider that it is time for you to begin your journey.
“His knowledge dwells in the house of Ignorance;
His force nears not even once the Omnipotent,
Rare are his visits of heavenly ecstasy.
The bliss which sleeps in things and tries to wake,
Breaks out in him in a small joy of life:
This scanty grace is his persistent stay;
It lightens the burden of his many ills
And reconciles him to his little world,
He is satisfied with his common average kind;
Tomorrow’s hopes and his old rounds of thought
His old familiar interests and desires.”
“His being was formed on a petty stage;
In a narrow plot he has pitched his tent of life
Beneath the wide gaze of the starry Vast.”
It’s time to start. It’s time to start seeing yourself and the world differently. It’s time to start being disciplined and moving beyond your old mind. It’s time to move from your little life to your greater life. You don’t have to know how it will happen. The vertical world supplies the “how” to your desires and choices. You have to supply the “what.” It doesn’t know “how” if you don’t know “what.”
“A mighty victory or a mighty fall,
A throne in heaven or a pit in hell,
Whatever Fate may do to them they have earned.”
It’s all about consciousness. When will you start?
