Lesson 25: The Problem of Pain
The words to describe the mystery of grief and pain that penetrate life are vain and provide no relief or reality for understanding your arduous path through life. As we are taught, pain and suffering is the ransom of human life only to be relieved through the act of death. “That’s just the way it is,” it is said. The game is rigged.
“An ill-armed warrior facing dreadful odds
An imperfect worker given a baffling task,
An ignorant judge of problems Ignorance made,
Its heavenward flights reach closed and keyless gates,
Its glorious outburst peter out in mire,
On Nature’s gifts to man a curse was laid:
All walks inarmed by its own opposites,
Error is the comrade of our mortal thought
And falsehood lurks in the deep bosom of truth,
Sin poisons with its vivid flowers of joy
Or leaves a red scar burnt across the soul;
Virtue is a grey bondage and a gaol.
At every step is laid for us a snare.”
Who has not known pain and loss? There is nothing to be achieved by continuing to go into the descriptions of the doom and fall of life other than to acknowledge the conspiracy life has with it. If you believe you are spared, you will find out differently. You can choose which class you want to take but you don’t get to choose the curriculum. Where is security? Where is meaning in a meaningless world?
The problem with your pain is three-fold:
1. Your unwillingness to change your mind about it.
2. Your willingness to tolerate it.
3. No one has ever shown you or taught you the role of pain. But then again, chances are, you never asked.
“O mortal who complainst of death and fate,
Accuse none of the harms thyself hast called;
This troubled world thou hast chosen for thy home,
Thou art thyself the author of thy pain.”
Unequivocally and without exception, I assure you that your judgments, beliefs, opinions, perceptions, projections, positions and thoughts mean nothing. They mean nothing. They are only by-products of your unconscious mind whose goal is to survive and to be right. As a result, your mind is fogged over and lacks clarity and sight (and so is mine). Your mind does not “see” what is out there…it “sees” what is in your own mind and then projects it onto the world. You are a magician!
Simply consider…just imagine…the possibility that your suffering is not part of the world but is part of you. Simply consider…just imagine…the possibility that, drawn to the unknown and ambiguous journey of becoming, you chose to be here. And if you chose to be here, then there is a reason for your coming. As with all things, this was your choice whether you are aware of that or not.
“Fate is truth working out in Ignorance.”
